SH.2009.372.6 Green with beige suede spine and pink marbled edging. Alex Cowan & Sons were a die stamping and envelope producing company based at Craigside Works in Edinburgh. The works had five levels. The layout of the works is as follows: On the top floor was the Ruling Department, using both pen and disc ruling, the Quarter Binding Department, the Finishing Department and the Half Binders. On the 4th floor there was the Sales Office, the Finished Book and Stationery Store, the Finishing Department, the Typesetting, the Canteen, the Sick Bay and the Envelope Machine Room. The 3rd floor held the Factory Offices, the Cost Office and paper warehouse. On the 2nd floor was the Envelope Cutting Room. On the lowest level, which was at the foot of Arthur Street, were the Despatch Bay, the Packing Room, Glue Making and a further Envelope Store. Edinburgh City of Print is a joint project between City of Edinburgh Museums and the Scottish Archive of Print and Publishing History Records (SAPPHIRE). The project aims to catalogue and make accessible the wealth of printing collections held by City of Edinburgh Museums.
